Neukirchen and the surrounding region is home to all kinds of hiking opportunities.
Beginners and families with small children can follow a family hiking trail through the valley or take a mountain railway up the Wildkogel to enjoy a leisurely circular trail. Alternatively, you can also walk downhill along the panorama trail to the middle station and from here, take the slides trail with 10 different open and closed stainless steel slides running down into the valley. Advanced hikers can climb the many peaks, use the fixed ropes trails or enjoy a high mountain walk. There is an endless range of footpaths and fixed ropes courses here. If you prefer to explore with a cable and carabiner, there are plenty of climbing routes available where you tackle cliff walls of varying difficulty ratings to climb the peaks. And for those who have never tried climbing or hiking and want to, hiking and climbing guides are available in Neukirchen.
Neukirchen am Großvenediger – the mountain listed in our place name is the highest in the Salzburgerland region at 3,657m and is best approached from Neukirchen. A summit tour of the Großvenediger is a real high mountain tour. Climbing the highest mountain in the Salzburgerland requires a good dose of fitness and Alpine experience. The first ascent to the summit of the Großvenediger was achieved on 3 September 1941 by Josef Schwab (known as Hausstetter Sepp) 40 years after the first ascent of the des Großglockner.
If you have ever climbed the Großvenediger, you can be proud to have climbed the fifth highest mountain in Austria!
